From Temporary to Permanent!
Maria received her 10 year Permanent Residency Card after spending years renewing her Temporary Protected Status Work Permit every two years. It took a total of only 4 months from filing her application until she received her green card.
“I’m so happy with the work The American Dream Center did for me. I am referring all my friends.”
A Journey of Perseverance: Becoming a U.S. Citizen
Thirty years ago, I arrived in the United States as a 19-year-old young woman from Bulgaria with a heart full of dreams and just $100 in my pocket. My goal was clear: to study, start a nonprofit organization, and make a difference in people’s lives around the world. Little did I know that my immigration journey would be a long road filled with challenges, setbacks, and opportunities to grow.
I began on a student visa and later transitioned to an Optional Practical Training Visa (F1) and a Religious Workers Visa (R1). In 2001, an error in a lawyer’s filing set off a series of delays and legal battles that stretched over two decades. During this time, I faced uncertainty, financial strain, and the heartbreak of being unable to see my family in Bulgaria due to travel restrictions.
Finally, in 2020, I became a green card holder. And on December 12, 2024—just a week after celebrating 30 years since I first arrived in the U.S.—I proudly took the oath of citizenship. I am deeply grateful to Vera Burgess and the American Dream Center for their guidance in the final stretch of this journey. Their help in filing my application, and navigating this last chapter made all the difference, allowing me to finally complete this process and step into a new season of life.
I feel deep gratitude for the lessons learned and the opportunities ahead, along with the privilege of being a part of this great nation.
To anyone facing immigration struggles, I want to encourage you: don’t give up. The road may be long, sometimes even unfair, but every step builds strength, character, and determination. Your dreams are worth fighting for, and your perseverance will pave the way to victory.
